I've been thinking about Dave Chappelle's new stand up special.
Full disclosure, I have not actually seen it, but it is hard to avoid the news stories, which include some, if not all, of the quotes from his routine that have caused issue.
Personally, I do not find the "jokes" funny as written (and doubt I'd find them any funnier as spoken), but I have often found Dave Chapelle to be very hit and miss, and would not really consider myself a fan.
We also, all know that comedy is subjective. What is funny to one, won't be to another, it is the reason why there are numerous types of comedians, each doing their own thing.
But this isn't really about whether the "jokes" were funny or not.
I want to relate a story I don't think I've shared before about my childhood that I think illustrates that while comedians should have leeway & freedoms, it should not be at the expense of denigrating others.
When I was 14 I was part of a travel summer camp. We took day trips to different places...
Actually, let me back up first and say, what I believe I have said before, I was a very unpopular, frequently picked on, child. I had bad asthma, was deathly underweight, with big ears, glasses, and a terrible voice (for the record I still think my voice is terrible today).So I had a "great" childhood and "many" friends
So back to being 14 at travel camp. One day we went to the Improv in NYC to see several stand up acts. I don't recall any of the names, or if any of them went on to become a big name, but one comedian does stick in my memory.
He came up on stage and started talking about nerds and then asked the crowd, which was just my fellow campers, if there were any nerds here today. Several people pointed at me. For the next 10 minutes the comedian kept making "jokes" about me... basically attacking my appearance and lack of popularity. The kids laughed, whether because they thought it was actually funny, or because it is a comedy show and you're supposed to laugh when the comedian emphasizes a punchline, I'll never know, and frankly don't care. I don't blame the kids for laughing. I sat there, frozen, trying not to cry at being verbally attacked by an adult, while none of the other adults in the room did a thing.
When the comedian finished the host came up and tried to smooth things over by saying give me a round of applause for being a "good sport." Truth is, I wasn't a good sport, I was trying to put on a brave face, but inside I was crying. I wished I had some self esteem and had been able to stop the comedian from verbally attacking me, but I locked up, frozen in fear.
The rest of that summer kids kept bringing that comedian up and calling me a nerd and other things (thankfully, over time, I've forgotten a lot of the actual words).
The comedian wasn't funny, he was just being a mean spirited bully attacking someone much smaller than him. And that is what it seems like Dave Chappelle has done to the trans community with his "jokes." Maybe he didn't mean to... maybe the comedian I saw at age 14 didn't mean to either, but they should acknowledge that words can do harm, intentional or not.
