Lazlo's Corner
I have to admit, I'm a little shaken this week by the loss of Mike Peters of The Alarm on Tuesday from cancer, followed by the loss Thursday of Jill Sobule from a house fire. While neither artist is from New Jersey, I have been a fan of both for a long time, and lucky enough to have seen both perform live (though I'm disappointed that just last month I was unable to see Jill Sobule when she played in New Jersey).
People like to talk about what is and isn't punk rock. I'd like to argue here that both of these artists were punk rock in their own way.
Jill Sobule, as has been in pretty much every article I have seen about her this week, is widely considered the first artist to have a song with openly-gay themes to crack the Top 20 on the charts. She did so with a cheekily subversive song, and an even more subversive video that Fabio (at the height of his popularity) appeared in. What's more punk rock than that? That many only know her for "I Kissed A Girl", and "Supermodel", a song she didn't write, is a crime.
Mike Peters, and his band The Alarm, is often reduced to being known for "Rain In The Summertime" and "Sixty Eight Guns", but for over forty they put out amazing rock songs, and in one of the most punk acts (in my mind) of the 21st century, when European DJ's didn't want to play their 2004 single "45 RPM", saying that the band was too old to still be making good music, they hired a young local band to become "The Poppy Fields", a fake new band that released the single which quickly entered Britain's Top 30 charts and garnered a lot of positive press. When The Alarm finally came forward about The Poppy Fields being a hoax, it really highlighted ageism in the music industry (sadly here we 21 years later and ageism is still as big a problem as ever in music).
I've been listening to both artists a lot this weekend and realizing how much I will miss them both.
