Lazlo's Corner

I'm going to talk about movies this week, because, as I will get to shortly, the other day I watched one of the best films I've seen in a long time, and I fear this film is going to fly under the radar and be missed out on by most people.

Anyway, I watch a few movies a week, sometimes in increments because of my chaotic life. Since most of the movies I watch end up being what I refer to as "disposable" or "forgettable" movies, that's fine.

For instance I recently watched Heads Of State (Amazon Prime), which was predictable, but, in part because of the lead actors, was funny enough to be entertaining while I watched. Now, several weeks later, I don't remember much of the movie at all. Same with Death Of A Unicorn (HBO Max), which had a promising premise, but just did not fully succeed and survived based on the strength of the actors involved.

Other times I head into a film, fully expecting not to like it, and I am pleasantly surprised.

I do not know much of Robbie Williams' music (though as I learned from watching this film he covered a World Party song, and I love their music), and I generally hate biopics (I prefer documentaries), but Better Man (Amazon Prime) I actually kind of enjoyed (and no this is not the best film I've seen in a long time).

It is a pretty standard music biopic...

Man (Robbie Williams) has daddy issues.

Thinks fame will solve all his problems

Fame leads to drug & alcohol problem... etc.

Except...

Robbie Williams is played by a CGI chimp, and the movie is a musical.

Those two things should make the movie terribly silly... but, to me at least, that's exactly why this movie worked. Somehow I think it made me more empathetic to the rather cliched situation.

But this leads me to the film that led me to write this column in the first place, Memoir Of A Snail (Hulu/Disney+).

If you're familiar with animator Adam Elliot already (I was not), than maybe you'd have been prepared for this beautiful film he has directed.

Despite it being on Hulu/Disney+, and being stop motion animation, this is not a kids film, it is rated R (which I think is harsh, it probably should have been a PG-13). it tells the story of a lonely misfit (relatable), Grace Pudel (voiced superbly by Sarah Snook). Hulu labels this as a comedy, but it is more accurately a drama with some comedic moments.

The entire film is beautiful, with melancholy moments juxtaposed with lighter moments. The 90 minute run time went by quickly.

The real gem of the film if last 5-10 minutes of the movie. Where as some movies do not know how to have a satisfying ending (the aforementioned Death Of A Unicorn's ending seemed incongruous to the rest of the movie), the ending of Memoir Of A Snail had me smiling and uncontrollably weeping (yeah, I cry at the end of some movies, deal with it), feeling complete empathy for an animated character because she was written, drawn (I guess sculpted is more accurate), and voiced with so much emotion.

Few movies have moved me as much as this film has, and I feel like I'm doing a terrible job explaining how magical a film it is. So just go watch it for yourself. Or at least check out the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ehc8cc7g31I&pp=0gcJCfwAo7VqN5tD
